Startup Weekend is a global grassroots movement of active and empowered entrepreneurs who are learning the basics of founding startups and launching successful ventures. it is nonprofit event with over 1000 past events in 170 countries around the world.

Startup Weekend Education (SWEDU) was founded on the belief that entrepreneurship is the most powerful force to positively impact education outcomes. We are a global initiative that brings people together over the course of 54 hours to launch startups that have the ability to drastically improve the educational experience for various types of learners. Only two years old, SWEDU has already expanded to 16 cities across the world, and we are excited to give everyone an unprecedented opportunity to play a role in creating the future of education.

On January 17-19 we organize the first Startup Weekend Education in Athens, Greece.

We aim to bring together a diverse group of people passionate about making a positive impact on education. Anyone is welcome to pitch their idea and receive feedback from the peers. In 54 hours, participants share ideas, form teams, design products and launch education startups.

Whether entrepreneurs found companies, find a cofounder, meet someone new, or learn a skill far outside their usual, everyone is guaranteed to leave the event better prepared to navigate the chaotic but fun world of startups. The first 3 ideas that will come out from Athens SWEDU will be rewarded with some interesting opportunities, thanks to products and services offered by the local and global sponsors of Athens SWEDU.


The Industry Disruptors-Game Changers, one of the strongest organizations promoting entrepreneurship in Greece at both a national and an international level, and the award-winning Greek company MSCOMM will award the winners as follows: depending on their sector, the winners will automatically enter the relevant competitions of The Industry Disruptors, and will attend the workshop "1,5 day training on business model generation, customer development and lean startup methodology" by Ihsan Elgin (Director Center for Entrepreneurship at Ozyegin University, Co-Founder of Startup Turkey).

In addition, the winning teams will enter “Rate your Startup Project” to get evaluation, profitability measurement, and develop their leadership skills. Finally, the winners will attend an advisory seminar in communication by MSCOMM.


Focusing on the concept of "Ideas Worth Spreading", TEDxAUEB supports passionate future entrepreneurs who wish to adopt a new attitude and contribute to the educational arena. Since the event is entirely organized by students and holds its own "StudentAct" entrepreneurship competition, the TEDx AUEB team actively supports ideas committed to building new products aiming to improve education. Consequently, the team will kindly offer a free pass to the main TEDx AUEB event in March to each member of the winning team of Athens SWEDU.

3. Impact Hub Athens

The Impact Hub is the first globally connected network of local social innovation. The first 3 winners will be able to join the vibrant community of The Impact Hub Athens, thereby gaining access to the educational programs of The Impact Hub, unlimited use of its infrastructure and direct networking with social innovators & entrepreneurs, investors and experts at both an international and a local level.

Managing Director, member of the Portfolio Management Committee, has advised Baring Private Equity since 2004 and fully joined in 2008 where he co-leads the education vertical. BPEA is the largest Private Equity investor in education in Asia/Pacific. Mr. Kalliarekos was founding member and Senior Partner of The Parthenon Group, a strategic advisory firm with offices in Boston, London, San Francisco, Shanghai and Mumbai. Mr. Kalliarekos founded and headed the firm’s Education Industry Center of Excellence. Within the world of education, Kosmo has worked with both private and government organizations, global foundations,established companies and start-ups. Previously, Mr. Kalliarekos was Consultant with Bain and Company. Mr. Kalliarekos holds a B.S. in Economics from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and was a Baker Scholar, M.B.A. from Harvard Business School

Michael Goldberg

Michael Goldberg is an experienced venture capitalist and international business leader whose teaching is focused on the fields of entrepreneurship and early stage finance. Goldberg is a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Design and Innovation at the Weatherhead School of Management, Case Western Reserve University. Goldberg also co-founded the Bridge Investment Fund, a venture capital fund focused on investing in Israeli medical device companies that have synergies with the leading health care industries and institutions in Cleveland. Goldberg is also a Senior Advisor to Kaiwu Capital, a Chinese venture capital fund.
Goldberg was the Director of International Business Development for America Online, responsible for structuring and negotiating international partnerships in Asia, including AOL’s joint venture with Lenovo to develop interactive services for the China market. Goldberg spent several years in South Africa working for the National Democratic Institute, designing and implementing voter education programs for South Africa’s historic first democratic election in 1994. Goldberg also worked for Microsoft and the International Management Group (IMG). Goldberg has deep experience teaching entrepreneurship in international markets. He was awarded a Fulbright fellowship in 2012 to teach entrepreneurship at the National Economics University in Hanoi, Vietnam, and also lectured on behalf of Fulbright in Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar. During the summer of 2013, Goldberg taught entrepreneurial management at Bilkent University in Ankara, Turkey. Monica Chellam

Monica joined Coursera as an intern in September 2013, excited to think about how Coursera might continue to grow internationally and touch the lives of students all over the world. She is currently pursuing her MBA at Stanford's Graduate School of Business. Before returning to school, Monica worked in social enterprise and government, spending more than five years as a U.S. diplomat in Washington, D.C., Hanoi, Vietnam, and Brussels, Belgium. Monica has a B.A. in International Relations from Pomona College and enjoys adventuring, hiking photography, and great coffee.

Sofia Papadimitriou

She is a PhD Candidate in Distance Learning at the School of Humanities of the Hellenic Open University. She works in the Educational RadioTelevision of Ministry of Education since September 2007 and she coordinates its Digital and Social Media (,, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Blog, Vimeo, Linked-In). Furthermore she participated at the “Energy-bits” project (2012-13) regarding the sustainable use of energy and supported by “Intelligent Energy”. She has co-authored three book chapters and 25 papers in scientific conferences and journals on the topics of Open and Distance Learning, Media in Education, Open Educational Resources, Professional Learning Networks, Academic Staff Development, and STEM Teaching.

Sakis Georgiadis

Sakis is a partner at Hermes GPE, the private equity asset management arm of the British Telecom pension scheme. He spent his first 7 years with the firm based in London and was responsible coverage of the Nordic, CEE and Southern European regions. In 2011 he established Hermes GPE’s Singapore office and has since been responsible for all investment and business activities in Asia Pacific. Sakis was previously a strategy consultant at LEK Consulting where he worked as an advisor on a number of private equity transactions. He started his career working for HSBC Pantelakis Securities in Athens, before spending two years as a warrant officer in the Greek army. Nikos Frydas

Dr. Nikos P. Frydas has a varied and extensive experience in the fields of telecommunications, information technology, education and management. Between 1982 and 1992 he worked with the Electrical Engineering Department of De Montfort University, Leicester, as a principal lecturer in Telecommunications. In 1992 he joined Ideal Group in Athens, initially as a consultant on telecommunications and then as the manager of the telecommunications department. In 1996 he founded Ideal Telecom (a daughter company of the Group) and he became its General Manager until his departure in 2001. In 2001 Dr. Frydas worked for Vodafone and then for Alpha TV and in 2003 he became the Director of Agetor Informatics Ltd, a company specializing on the provision of IT solutions for the Social Security sector. In 2008 he became the Director of Studies of the KCL Group, which offers educational & consultancy services to the shipping industry and since Jan 2013 he works for the New York College, as the Provost of its University in Tirana. Dr. Frydas is the elected President of Safenet since 2000, a non-for-profit company of the Internet industry of Greece. He holds a B.Sc. degree in Physics from the National University of Athens, a B.A. degree in Electrical Sciences from Cambridge University, an M.Sc degree in Digital Telecommunications from Essex University and a Ph.D. degree on information coding from Loughborough University of Technology.

Alexis Komselis

Professor Michael Meimaris is the founder and director of the New Technologies Laboratory in Communication, Education and the Mass Media of the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies of the University of Athens. He has studied Mathematics in the University of Athens and Statistics and computer based Data Analysis in Paris (University Paris VI Pierre et Marie Curie). His scientific interests involve the application of New Technologies in Communication, Education and the Mass Media, Graphics and Computer Animation, the New Technological Communication Environment and its design, Digital Storytelling, Intergenerational Communication and Learning, Visual Communication, Digital Game-Based Learning, Open and Distance Education, as well as the training of educators in the New Technologies field.He is a member of the International Committee and President of the National Committee of the Möbius Awards, member of the Scientific Board of the Maison des Sciences de l’Homme Nord of France, as well as of C.I.T.I. of the University of Lisbon and member of the jury of the French Laboratories of Excellence action of the French National Research Agency (ANR). Taxibeat , where Apostolos is also member of the board, is transforming the way people get a taxi around the globe with the company having presence in Brazil, Mexico and France.Furthermore in 2011 Apostolos cofounded which is the largest online food delivery aggregator in Greece with more than 900 restaurants in 15 Greek cities. Christopher Brellis

He was born in 1973, in Athens, Greece. An industrial designer by training, he studied at Ravensbourne College and the Royal College of Art in London, where he resided until 2001. He has also studied and worked in Finland, Japan and the Netherlands. Founder of Antidot Design Studio, a multi-disciplinary business entity with a diverse 10-year long course within the design labyrinth: industrial design, new media in performing arts, set design, as well as Graphic and web design. Theo Anagnostopoulos is a science communicator and a social entrepreneur. Yannis Kotsanis holds a PhD in Computer Engineering and Educational Technology from the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA). From 1987 onwards is Head of the ICT Department at Doukas School (Preliminary -Secondary Education). His main research interests pertaining to the innovative education, the school of the future, educational software, geography and adult training. He has worked as senior researcher and senior project manager in more than 50 R&D programs and he has participated in the development of more than 60 educational software titles. Moreover, he is a trainer/tutor/instructor in Undergraduate and Postgraduate Courses and Seminars on Information Technology in Education. He is also the co-author of more than 70 publications in Greek and International Conferences and Journals and a member and reviewer of National Conference Committees. Tina Miteko

Tina is a technology marketing executive with more than 15 years of experience working in Silicon Valley. She currently advises technology companies on their marketing strategy and execution. Previously, Tina was the Director of Corporate Marketing at Keynote Systems, the global leader in Internet and mobile cloud testing and monitoring, where she led a team of marketing professionals responsible for Keynote's marketing initiatives worldwide. Tina has a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from University of the Pacific and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree from the University of San Francisco. An exceptional athlete, Tina excelled in basketball as a point-guard, where she competed for the Greek Junior National Team, was an Olympic hopeful vying for a spot at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games and has also competed in NCAA Division I in the US. During her free time she can be found in a basketball court either playing, coaching or watching hoops, enjoying outdoor running, racing in triathlons and pretty much near anything that has to do with sports.
